International Pairs Qualifier – 27^th July 2008

This is a Stableford competition with the best score on each hole counting and with only a ¾ handicap allowance, it was game on for the 28 pairs entered. The competition was fierce with only one pair qualifying for a place in one of the semi-finals being played on the courses listed :-

The top spot was a close fought contest with 3 teams playing and scoring well. The overall winning team with a total of 41 points (on count back) was the pair of Gav Phillips and AA Powell, with last years qualifiers Neil and Julian being placed third.

Stewart Wenham Trophy – 20^th July 2008

This is a Stableford competition played with full handicap allowance and the way the course was playing the 70 entrants needed all the help that was available. The course was still set-up as the previous week of Members and Guests, so the course was playing a full 5572 yards.

Standing on the 14^th tee deciding whether to take a 9 or 8 iron, checking which way the wind was blowing and then being stunned when the bunker has changed to a pond, it’s very different when you see your ball land in a pond instead of a bunker.

But there was only one player to master the course this week, as the Competition Scratch Score reflected this with a CSS of 71. The winner with a massive 4 points difference was Dan Edwards with a well-deserved 41 points. As the CSS was so high and the next score was 34 points this competition was a Reduction Only, except for Dan Edwards.

Members & Guests – 13^th July 2008

On a wonderful sunny Sunday 13^th July, the 2008 Members and Guests, with over 75 pairs entered, the day began. This competition is a combined Stableford score with full handicap allowance.

The course was playing extremely long, as Martin Powell (Greenkeeper) deciding to place the White Tees as far back as possible and the pins in some awkward places. With some of the regular players struggling to get to the 18^th with a reasonable score and even getting off the 1^st tee without hitting into the bushes in front.

Nearly all the guests making comments on how well presented the course was, the few that didn’t had the problem of the 1^st tee. Many a golf ball was lost on the day (all these add to Graham’s retirement fund) and there is still a few guests missing in action (looking for they ball in the rough on the 2^nd, 4^th,10^th and 11^th).

Once again Lyn Powell and the girls behind the bar kept all the players fed and watered.

A big THANK YOU to all involved with the preparation, layout and service of the meal afterwards.
