Captains Day - 06/07/08

Captains Day – 6th July 2008

Captain 2008 – Stewart Wenham

Sunday 9.30am, the Tees are loaded and then some. The hooter sounds and over 70 entrants tee off on a shotgun start for Captains Day 2008. The competition is Stableford based with full handicap allowance (to give us a chance of a good score, as the course should play easier) and the competitions is played off the Yellow Tees. The course did play easier for some of the golfers, but for the majority the course was just as tough as playing from the White Tees.

In the winners enclosure (who found the course that little bit easier) are :-

Up to and including 13 handicap

1st Neil Taylor (4) – 40 pts. Scoring 19 points on the front 9 and 21 points on the back 9, only dropped 1 shot on the front and 3 Birdies on the back, Neil once again parred the course. What a player!!!

2nd Michael ‘Spud’ Randell (11) – 38 pts (on count back).  With steady scoring on both 9’s and a Birdie on each side his total is split 19 in and 19 out. Well played.

14 Handicap and above

1st Mike Dobbs (15) – 41 pts. With only 1 Birdie and 1 Blob on his round, Mike scored 21 out and 20 in. Handicap dropping time !!!

2nd Paul Lewis (21) – 38 pts. With 1 Birdie and 2 Blobs on his round, Paul scored 18 out and 20 in. Again check your handicap after this round.

Out of the 78 entrants only 23 players, played within their buffer zone or better than their handicaps. To those players, well done, to the other 55 players, what a good day was had by all.

The other awards for the day go to :-

Nearest Pin 12th – Neil Taylor

Nearest Pin 18th – Barry Turner

Longest Drive 9th – Luke Ralph

Hacker – Alan Watkins (21 pts)

Bandit (including Sombrero)  - Paul Lewis

Booby Prize – Peter Greaves (18 pts)

Captains Challenge 14th – Mark McAlpine (pick a club and nearest pin with range ball)

Sloe Play – Lew Williams, Carl Shannon, Kevin Powell, Alan Powell (a bottle of Sloe Gin)

A few closing comments :-

1.      The course was in excellent condition, thank you to Martin Powell and all who help to keep the course in tip top condition.

2.      Stewart Wenham (Club Captain), thank you for playing this competition off the Yellow Tees and for giving us a chance to score (even though only a few took the opportunity).

3.      For the buffet before the presentation and to keep the beer flowing to all the thirsty players. A BIG THANK YOU to Lyn and the girls behind the bar. How Lyn manages to produce all the food for us from such a small area amazes me every time.

One last thing, see you next year when you’re Captain will be Mr Dai Wall.
