Horse & Jockey Riders Cup, 04th May 2008
May began with the Horse & Jockey Riders Cup playing in a Stableford format with full handicaps permitting. The competition has been well seated in the May for many years. The competition day started damp but the club golf stars were not deterred as a hint of sunshine broke through. The key star of the competition was again Luke Ralph as he parred the course playing off a 5 handicap. He romped home to win a head, neck and full body of a horse with 41 points. Luke may not be playing off five for much longer he may become the newest Category 1 golfer. Should this competition be re-named to Luke Ralph does it again!!!

A Joke.
A nun walks into Mother Superior’s office and plunks down into a chair. She lets out a sigh heavy with frustration.
“What troubles you, Sister?” asks the Mother Superior. “I thought this was the day you spent with your family.”“It was,” sighed the Sister. “And I went to play golf with my brother. We try to play golf as often as we can. You know I was quite a talented golfer before I devoted my life to Christ.” I seem to recall that,” the Mother Superior agreed. “So, I take it your day of recreation was not relaxing?”
“Far from it,” snorted the Sister. “In fact, I even took the Lord’s name in vain today!”
“Goodness, Sister!” gasped the Mother superior, astonished. “You must tell me all about it!”“Well, we were on the fifth tee…and this hole is a monster, Mother - 540 yard Par 5, with a nasty dogleg left and a hidden green …and I hit the drive of my life. I creamed it. The sweetest swing I ever made. And it was flying straight and true right along the line I wanted …and it hits a bird in mid-flight not 100 yards off the tee!”“Oh, my!” commiserated the Mother. “How unfortunate! But surely that didn’t make you blaspheme, Sister!”“No, that wasn’t it,” admitted Sister. “While I was still trying‘ to fathom what had happened, this squirrel runs out of the woods, grabs –my ball and runs off down the fairway!”“But I didn‘t, Mother Superior!” sobbed the Sister. “And I was so proud of myself! And while I was pondering whether this was a sign from God, this hawk swoops out of the sky and grabs the squirrel and flies off, with my ball still clutched in his paws!”“So that’s when you cursed,” said the Mother with a knowing smile.“Nope, that wasn’t it either,” cried the Sister anguished, “because as the hawk started to fly out of sight, the squirrel started struggling, and the hawk dropped him right there on the green, and the ball popped out of his paws and rolled to about 18 inches from the cup!”Mother Superior sat back in her chair, folded her arms across her chest fixed the Sister with a baleful stare and said….”You missed the @!*&?~# putt, didn’t you?”

Thank you to T J Hodgins and R Williams for you letter belowI started playing golf in 1958 at Pontypool Golf Club. I can’t remember the exact month which is a pity as I will never know when the 50th Anniversary arrives or whether it has already passed me by. It doesn‘t really matter because the main thing is that I‘ve mainly enjoyed the experience. On looking back, I was most tempted to pack it in, during that first 3 months when my most consistent shot was the‘ ‘Air‘ shot and I was too embarrassed to have anyone witness my pathetic attempts to get the ball more than 3 feet off the ground. After one particularly bad morning when I had been spraying my small and precious stock of golf balls to all corners of the globe, I realised that I couldn’t keep playing golf without either becoming a pauper or shelling out a week‘s pocket money for a proper golf lesson. I did just that and immediately learned I‘d been playing an entirely different game to the one they called ‘Golf’. I’m not saying it was a miraculous conversion but breaking a hundred (on the first nine) was definitely a big step forward from where I‘d been previously. In those 50 years I have been a member of 6 different golf clubs, (one at a time), and the last one I joined was Wernddu, in 2003.
