President’s Cup Day 1 MVP: Woody Austin
The most exciting match of the day was Phil Mickelson and Woody Austin versus Vijay Singh and Canadian Mike Weir. The match was see-saw all day and went to the final hole all tied. Amazingly, Woody Austin was the MVP of the match, rolling in 4 unbelievably clutch putts on the back 9, none bigger than the final putt on the 18th hole from 20 feet. I'll give Woody credit today. He proved that he has guts.
Meanwhile, did you see Vijay Singh had a 5-footer left to halve the match, but Phil and Woody conceded the putt to to Vijay upon the instruction of Jack Nicklaus. None of the announcers could believe their eyes. But, after the round, Phil said "when Captain Nicklaus says something" he does it (although Phil admitted that he might not have conceded the putt on his own). Then, all the TV announcers supported the decision. That's the power of Nicklaus.
