History of Wernddu Golf Club

Wernddu Farmhouse was originally built in the 11th Century and was owned by "Gwarin the Black" who himself was a descendant of "Ynyr" King of Gwent in the 5th Century.

Gwarin the Black was so named because of his black hair whilst his brother with red hair was Gwarin the Red and lived on an adjacent farm "Werngochlyn".
Over the centuries Gwarin the Black or "Gwarinddu" in the welsh language, became wernddu and so remains today.
Completely rebuild in the 15th century and with major alterations in the 18th century, it is now much as it was then and is one of the oldest occupied farmhouses in Gwent.

First occupied by the Watkins' in 1937 it has been continually occupied by the family since then.
Originally a mixed dairy farm, major diversification started in the 1970's to fruit and vegetables growing both as pick your own and for retail sales in the farm shop.  Many of our present members came in those days to pick strawberries (often bringing their own cream for picnics!)
Dairy farming ceased entirely in 1977, and the first adventure into the leisure industry commenced with a small campsite and six holiday cottages in the 1980's.
In 1990, in order to supplement the winter income a golf driving range was built.  This proved popular and the fruit and vegetable area was reduced in 1992 to accommodate a 9 hole "starter" golf course to encourage newcomers to the wonderful game of golf,  This is now our "back 9".
In 1994 the remaining area of horticultural was replaced by a seconds 9 hole course, our "front 9" although for a few years we used various alternative starting holes, before our current system was adopted. At this time the club house and facilities were also built and Wernddu Golf Club was established.

The course is built on the original farmland, which has south facing slopes, and well drained soil. The layout of the course has utilized the existing contours of the ground, and supplemented by several ponds which are also utilized for irrigation purposes. Over 20,000 trees were planted at the inception of the course, and these have matured magnificently, and their autumn colours are spectacular. The situation of Wernddu is on the rising ground to the east of Abergavenny, thus providing magnificent views over the Town and the Usk River Valley. The town itself is surrounded by the Seven Hills, and the final outcome is breathtaking.

Initially Wernddu attracted members who appreciated the more relaxed atmosphere in th Clubhouse, where rugby is on the T.V more than golf, and any of these early members, with a membership number of less than 100 should be highly respected!!

The club continues to thrive now with over 500 members.
